Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Principal Embedded Hardware/Firmware Engineer in the Emerging Digital Technologies for fourth Industrial Revolution (EDT4IR) Research Centre within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to design, develop and implement IoT systems architecture and solutions; and also be a systems level technical lead with a team of engineers responsible to deliver solutions to clients and commercializable product to business . This position is based in Pretoria.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure code compliance and best practices are adhered to;
  • Communicate with vendors of components and tools as needed;
  • Participate in project proposals and detailed specifications based on the needs of the business;
  • Lead and coordinate projects involving hardware/firmware development and RTOS development;
  • Lead the development of the system’s low-level software architecture;
  • Contribute to various aspects of the product development life cycle including concept development, analogue and digital circuit design and printed circuit board (PCB) design / manufacturing and packaging of robust or industrialised products;
  • Develop innovative solutions in IoT and remain well-versed in new technologies in the evolving IoT space;
  • Debug issues related to product development;
  • Develop test procedures and test hardware, software and systems developed;
  • Implement firmware and hardware drivers;
  • Provide technical and thought leadership for the development and integration of new IoT solutions;

Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronic engineering or related fields with at least ten years’ electronic engineering (embedded hardware and firmware) experience, of which five years’ should be in IoT field;
  • Experience in technical writing, such as preparing good quality technical reports for complex systems;
  • Must be extremely proficient in embedded C /C++;
  • Must have a thorough grasp of TCP/IP (both IPv4 and IPv6) networking;
  • Experience in schematic and PCB design, electronic components selection and sourcing,, managing production, testing;
  • Experience with networking and communications standards, protocols, and technologies relevant to IoT (applications e.g. BLE, Wi¿Fi, 6LoWPAN, Zigbee, LoRa, Sigfox, and NB-IoT) for industrial applications;
  • Experience in developing low-power and real-time embedded systems, including sensor modelling and integration, hardware interfacing such as GPIO, UART, I2C, SPI;
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
  • An Honours or Master’s degree will be advantageous;
  • Proficient in rapid prototyping, development of multi-disciplinary nature;
