Job Description:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Mechanical Engineer in the Technology for Special Operations (TSO) impact area (IA) within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will perform research and development and knowledge applications, including technological innovation by providing technical inputs and outputs for mechanical designs. This will also include but not limited to testing and integration, verification and validation leading to the manufacturing of components, assemblies and sub-systems to be used in an airborne and landward special operations environment. This position is based in Pretoria.
Job Responsibilities:
- Document research outcomes to the satisfaction of the customer;
- Conduct research and development of new technologies;
- Contribute to the development of data packs, models, simulation results, and analysis of field data;
- Conduct the evaluations together with the customer and suppliers;
- Perform testing and integration, commissioning of components and/or sub-systems with other products (i.e., Military Vehicle, UAS, etc). This may include fault-finding and corrective action implementation;
- Research and perform trade-off studies for products or systems required by the client.
- Provide guidance to technicians in the field of mechanical engineering to work as a team and deliver quality project outputs;
- Interact with clients and successfully capture user requirements in the form of an URS document;
- Write test and evaluation procedures;
- Perform research and development of mechanical aspects of new products and enhancement of existing products;
- Design and build concept demonstrators in a short time by making use of rapid prototyping concepts;
Job Requirements:
- Ability to adapt easily to ever changing circumstances;
Working experience in the use of CADD/CAD software to provide concepts and system designs; - Demonstrated skills in: analytical thinking and decision-making, flexibility and adaptability, investigative orientation, planning and organising
- An Honours or a Master’s’ degree in mechanical engineering will be advantageous;
- Ability to work well under pressure and establish good working relationships with both internal and external clients;
- A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with least two years’ experience in mechanical engineering field;
- Ability to perform basic fault finding on mechanical systems;
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and other mechanical engineering concepts;
