Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Research Development and Innovation Communication Practitioner in the Human Capital and Communications Portfolio. The incumbent will be responsible for proactively communicating the CSIR’s activities in the Western Cape and developing relevant plans of engagement with CSIR stakeholders in the Western Cape region. He/she will assist the Divisional Communication Managers in communicating all internal and external communication functions for the division(s) in the Western Cape in line with the CSIR communication strategy to ensure consistency in CSIR messaging. This position is based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Job Responsibilities:

  • Source, write and appropriately package content across all the research clusters based in Cape Town and Stellenbosch, including assisting the CSIR Parliamentary Office with communication services;
  • Assist the RDI Communication Manager with implementing a CSIR-wide research communication plan, which will form part of the overall CSIR Communication Plan;
  • Apply communication plans to improve the broad understanding of the CSIR work in the Western Cape;
  • Assist in the implementing of divisional events such as open days in the Western Cape in conjunction with the CSIR’s events and business development and commercialisation functions;
  • Implement other communication actions, including the planning and execution of events in the Western Cape in partnership with the CSIR events team;
  • Assist in developing responses to the media about the organisation’s research and development, aligned to CSIR policies in liaison and collaboration with the RDI Communication Manager and Media Relations Manager;
  • Assist in gathering content about CSIR activities in the Western Cape to be used in CSIR promotional material, including brochureware, event-specific publications, multimedia products, exhibition material and presentations, in line with CSIR corporate identity guidelines and processes, in close collaboration with the business development and commercialisation function;
  • Identify and exploit opportunities for publicity in the Western Cape;

  • Adaptability and networking skills.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in science communication, journalism, public relations or a relevant qualification with a minimum of five years’ communication experience;
  • Advanced computer literacy;
  • Advanced communication skills both written and verbal;
