Engineer/Researcher: Life Cycle Assessment

About The Job

The CSIR has a vacancy for an Engineer/Researcher in the Sustainability, Economics & Waste Group within the Sustainable Ecosystems Impact Area of the CSIR. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct environmental life cycle assessment studies, as well as related assessments, in order to inform South Africa’s just transition to a green, low carbon, circular economy. The position is based in Stellenbosch (preferably), Pretoria or Durban.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental life cycle assessment studies, making use of relevant life cycle assessment software and databases;
  • Conduct related assessments such as material flow analyses, carbon footprint assessments, etc.;
  • Perform independent research, structured around addressing the policy, economic, social and behavioural aspects required for a just transition to a green, low carbon, circular economy and the implementation of extended producer responsibility;
  • Publish and present research findings in high impact peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences;
  • Build research networks and write research proposals formulating research questions and conceptualising solutions, so as to secure research funding;
  • Participate in other research projects within the Sustainability, Economics and Waste Research Group;
  • Undertake collaborative research projects with other national and international research institutes.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

  • A Master’s degree in engineering or a related field, with specific training and thesis work related to life cycle assessment
  • A Doctoral degree in engineering or a related field, with a thesis related to life cycle assessment, will be an advantage;
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
  • At least two years post-graduate working experience, with specific demonstrated experience in conducting life cycle assessment studies, would be an advantage;
  • Additional demonstrated expertise and experience related to several of the following would be an advantage: energy systems and modelling (including green hydrogen), sustainable consumption and production, environmental modelling, economic modelling, socio-economic assessment, data science, systems thinking, systems modelling, life cycle thinking, life cycle costing, social life cycle assessment, product environmental footprinting, carbon footprinting, material flow analysis and/or value chain analysis;
  • A track record of peer reviewed publications;
  • An interest in applications of research findings to the green economy, circular economy, extended producer responsibility and integrated waste management, and to ensuring a just energy transition;
  • The ability to perform both fundamental and applied research in multi-disciplinary diverse teams;
  • Evidence of independent/innovative thinking;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, written and oral presentation skills; and the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and to interact with a network of scientists;
  • Computer literacy: MSOffice as well as suitable LCA software such as SimaPro. Programming and modelling software skills will be an advantage.
