Website Amazon

Job Summary

Do you want to use your skills and abilities to solve challenging problems? Are you excited by the idea of operating services at a global scale? Is it important for you to work at an organisation where you will never stop learning? If so, come join us and be part of a team that is changing how AWS is building and operating their services.

As a member of our team, you will design and build solution to complex problems. You will get some guidance from senior engineers in your team but have the space to deliver features on your own. You will have a long term view of your team’s services and how they fit into the broader architecture. The services that your team own are used by many teams and you will have opportunities to work with and influence engineers and teams outside of your own team to build out EC2 architecture that supports Amazon scale business needs.

Engineers in our teams have great ownership, a drive to innovate and have resounding impact through what we build and operate. Our teams invent, design and build software that is stable, scalable and performant. We write and support code that is easy to understand with solutions that are pragmatic. On any given day we use Java, Kotlin, Typescript, Python, Ruby, Go and C++ as well as various Native AWS services and Amazon-internal tools. We don’t expect you to be an expert in, or know all these technologies, but we do expect you to have strong programming fundamentals and be excited to learn about these technologies.

As an Amazonian you will be on a path of life long learning, you will have access to internal communities and extensive training material that span all aspects of our business. You’ll enjoy interacting with some of the most diverse and talented engineers in our industry whether it is in team discussions, through breakfast talks or demos. As an engineer you will have a clear growth path and a manager that is invested in your success.

We follow a DevOps model and our teams are empowered to own the full development and support life-cycle of their systems. Our teams operate like start-ups who own a portfolio of services that includes everything from developing the long term vision for their products through to deciding on what technologies and development methodology or processes to follow.

Most of our team is based in Cape Town. Under normal circumstances, we mostly work from the office, but you will have the flexibility to manage your own time. Occasionally we work with our colleagues across the world meaning we accommodate different time-zones. This position involves on-call responsibilities.
