Key job responsibilities

As an experienced Systems Engineer, you have a role to play on a multi-disciplinary software development team operating and developing high quality software designs and implementing solutions autonomously to address the ambiguous challenges we encounter. You will interact with engineers and business owners across the company and work with an interdisciplinary team to design and scope solutions and to identify patterns that affect the performance, reliability, or availability of our systems and create automation that simplifies workloads that scale operations. You will also help recruit and interview for your team and mentor to develop others.

About The Team

Most of our team is based in Cape Town. Under normal circumstances, we mostly work from the office, but you will have the flexibility to manage your own time. Occasionally we work with our colleagues across the world meaning we accommodate different time-zones. This position involves on-call responsibilities. We continuously prioritize efforts to automate ourselves out of operational responsibilities to ensure the impact is minimal.

Basic Qualifications

  • BSC in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong understanding of Linux operating systems
  • 5+ years of experience as a Systems Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, Dev Ops Engineer or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience leveraging Dev Ops automation, build automation and configuration management tools
  • 2+ years of experience implementing and administering AWS services including EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS and Dynamo DB etc.
  • Experience with common networking protocols and services including TCP, UDP, DNS, and HTTP
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with typical server provisioning systems
  • Experience with Agile SCRUM or Kanban
  • Hands-on experience building monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and metrics reporting
  • Experience implementing DevOps concepts, tools, processes, and culture
  • Practical scripting experience in using shell scripting and languages like Perl, Python, or Ruby to integrate tools and systems with APIs
  • Experience with large, distributed systems and related technologies focusing on automation
