The ESG Specialist will be responsible for supporting the implementation, auditing and recording of the Environmental, Social and Governance programme, policy and procedures. This will include the analysis and measurement of key issues related to environmental and social impact assessment and sustainability risks across business operations with the aim of providing opportunities to gain competitive advantage, effectively manage risk and increase stakeholder value creation in a manner which fully protects Sun International and its subsidiaries’ interests.

The role will achieve these objectives by collaborating with Central Office and Business Unit leadership teams; building relationships with relevant stakeholders, optimising the use of technology and focusing on high levels of operational compliance

Key Performance Areas

  • Act as a Subject Matter Specialist on ESG principles and policies for Sun International operations
  • Support the ESG Manager in implementing the ESG programme and sustainability strategies, as well as monitoring the progress against commitments, targets and KPIs to support the improvement and optimisation of ESG practices and promotion of shared value and purpose.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of tools, platforms, and reports to ensure actionable ESG data is available.
  • Compile information for the ESG reporting process, including data collection, quality assessment, data management, outputs and insights on key ESG metrics and targets to monitor performance for ESG reporting to key stakeholders
  • Provide input into the compiling of audit templates and ESG impact methodologies and conduct evaluations in various areas of the business from both an internal and external perspective to identify and quantify relevant ESG risks, in accordance with its severity and likelihood of occurrence, to be appropriately prioritised
  • Collaborate with the SHE and Risk teams to assess risks from an ESG perspective and assist with the preparation and disclosure of such risks and mitigation steps taken to stakeholders
  • Support the ESG Manager with offering proactive guidance to the business to help assess and gauge opportunities to leverage business projects to achieve sustainability targets
  • Participate in conducting and support due diligence projects on business operations environmental, social and governance policies and practices as required
  • Monitor the data integrity and update the ESG management system to track the overall ESG performance of the group, highlighting any areas of concern for remedial action
  • Consolidate unit data and prepare annual Carbon Disclosure Project (CPD) and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) submissions
  • Draft sustainability related disclosures (Annual ESG Report) and publications and the collation of content.
  • Conduct market surveys of the public or in the private sector to gather additional ESG data and information and undertake continual analysis of peer companies and other corporates to assess and benchmark ESG positioning and disclosures, whilst identifying best practice
  • Where necessary attend unit operations meetings to develop disciplines and educate the business around ESG management principles and support operations in leveraging opportunities for improved social, environment and governance sustainability
  • Engage with the broader ESG community to build partnerships and shared best practices

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental and or social management, sustainability or other related field
  • 6 years’ experience in Sustainability / ESG and or environmental and social management, audit, or other related field
  • Experience in identifying ESG risk issues and developing mitigation measures to ensure operational compliance
  • Experience performing ESG reporting and compiling responses to ESG benchmarks including Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), CDP, TCFD, JSE Sustainability and Climate Disclosure Guidelines and S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment
  • Experience in climate stress testing and scenario analysis to generate strategic insights to support decision making
  • Project management experience
  • An analytical mindset with mathematical/quantitative skills and outstanding attention to detail, including the ability to process, investigate and work with large datasets in excel
  • Experience working with IsoMetrix is an advantage
